The Illusion of Rankings: How Big Tech Companies Distorted AI Ratings on Chatbot Arena

According to a study conducted by experts from Cohere Labs, Stanford and Princeton Universities, and other institutions, major tech companies including Meta, Google, and OpenAI used privileged access to the Chatbot Arena platform to conduct private testing of their AI models. This allowed them to select the best versions for public release, which distorted the objectivity of the rankings.

Key findings of the study:

• Private testing: Companies could upload multiple versions of their models, test them privately, and publish only the best results. For example, Meta tested 27 different variants of its Llama 4 model in a single month.
• Statistical model violations: This practice violates the assumptions of the Bradley-Terry statistical model used by Chatbot Arena to rank AI systems based on pairwise comparisons.
• Unequal data access: OpenAI and Google received 19.2% and 20.4% of all Chatbot Arena data respectively, while 83 open-source models jointly received only 29.7% of the data.
• Hidden model deprivation: Of the 243 public models, 205 were quietly removed or pushed to the background without notification, disproportionately affecting open-source models.

These actions undermine trust in Chatbot Arena as an objective platform for AI model evaluation and highlight the need to revise its policies to ensure fairness and transparency.

AWS Changes CloudWatch Logs Pricing in Lambda

AWS has changed the pricing model for CloudWatch Logs in Lambda, introducing a tiered pricing structure that may reduce costs for users with high log volumes.

New pricing model:

• Previously, all Lambda logs sent to CloudWatch Logs were charged at a flat rate of $0.50 per GB.
• Now, a tiered model is introduced, where the cost per GB decreases as the log volume increases:
  • First 10 TB per month: $0.50 per GB
  • Next 20 TB: $0.25 per GB
  • Next 20 TB: $0.10 per GB
  • Over 50 TB: $0.05 per GB

This model is automatically applied to all Lambda logs sent to CloudWatch Logs, with no need for code or configuration changes.

Additional features:

• AWS also added support for sending Lambda logs directly to Amazon S3 and Amazon Data Firehose, giving users more flexibility in log management.
• The cost of delivering logs to S3 and Firehose starts at $0.25 per GB and also decreases with larger data volumes.

These changes aim to reduce costs and provide users with more options for managing Lambda logs.

Meta Announces API Launch for Its Llama AI Models

GCC 15.1: Major Compiler Update with Support for C23, Rust, and Even Cobol

In April 2025, GCC 15.1 was released — a significant update to the GNU Compiler Collection. The new version brings expanded programming language support, including Rust, C, C++, and COBOL, along with performance and diagnostics improvements.

Key highlights include the default transition of the C compiler to the C23 standard, providing full support for the latest language specifications. For Rust, basic support for inline assembly has been added and the minimum required language version was lowered to 1.49, expanding compilation capabilities.
